INTRODUCING ... Wesley College Sophomore Two-Sport Standout Tori Dunbar

Victoria (Tori) Dunbar is in her sophomore year at Wesley College, but she’s marking a mark at the Dover, Del., campus.  She hopes to parlay her nursing education into a program that will help third-world countries.  She’s the leader of the campus Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (and a member of the CAC SAAC).  She’s one of more than a half dozen women to play on both the Wolverines field hockey and lacrosse teams.  And she scored one of the shootout goals that lifted the 2012 field hockey squad into the CAC Championship game for the second-straight year.  INTRODUCING … Tori Dunbar.

Briefly, what is your background in the sport you play?   This season is my second season of playing lacrosse. I first started playing lacrosse my freshman year at Wesley.

What is your major in college, and what is the most important thing you learned in that discipline?   My major is Nursing at Wesley. The most important thing I have learned in the Nursing Program is time management because between simulation labs, clinicals, practices and games there is not usually time left for the important things in life. Oh, and hand washing- it is the best way to prevent infection!

What is your favorite spot on campus?   This is super cliché, but I love the turf field. During night practices, I can play and watch the sunset, during morning workouts I can see the sunrise, and my high school didn’t have turf, so I am thankful for the field.

Outside of your home and campus, where is your favorite place visit?  I love to visit our beach house in Ocracoke Island, NC. It is a small island on the Outer Banks and it is so peaceful. It has beautiful beaches, the best coffee shop ever and the town is so small people do not drive around, everyone rides their bikes. I always tell my parents it’s boring but I secretly adore it.

Other than your team, what organization (s) do you participate in (on campus or off campus)?   I am involved in the Student Nurses Association, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, I am the Vice President for the Student Athlete Advisory Committee and I am working towards becoming an inducted member of the National Society for Leadership and Success as I hold a position of a social events committee.

Briefly describe the most memorable experience during your collegiate athletic career.   My most memorable experience during my collegiate athletic career took place this past field hockey season when we played Mary Washington. We took Mary Washington into double overtime and then into stroke-offs. I, along with Mini (Sheree Pleasanton), (Danielle) Tearl, Rachel (Joyner) and Tristin Burris took the strokes that night (Liz Groom) was an awesome goalie too) and we won the game in strokes.

What is the most important societal issue facing college students?   Binge drinking-it’s a big issue on almost every college campus.

If you could change any one item in the world (in your personal life, school, community, amateur or professional sports, national/international issue, etc.), what would it be, why, and how would you do it?   If there was one thing I would change it would be the health issues in third world countries. It’s pretty cliché, but many of those health issues are simple and cheap to prevent from happening. I would change this because I love to help others. Unfortunately, I cannot singlehandedly change it- but I’m going to school for nursing and I plan to eventually do some type of medical mission.

Other than your family members, who was the most influential person in your life?   The most influential person in my life, who will remain unnamed, told me your actions are always reactions. Most of the time this person never makes sense, but when I think about what they say I learn to put others first, look at how other people are feeling, be interested in peoples past, and not judge- give everyone a chance.

What is your favorite form of entertainment?   I am super nerdy and I do not watch TV that often, but I read because I like to.

What is your favorite source of information (TV, book, magazine, website, friends in dining hall, etc.)?   Wherever we are, whether it is in the caf, on our way to class, or up super late studying while eating club crackers, nutella, and M&Ms (don’t say gross till you try it!), my friends and I are always giving each other advice or talking about what’s going on in our lives.

If you could give one piece of advice to elementary school children, what would that advice be?   My advice to them would be to love everyone in their lives- their families, friends, teachers, and even those meanies because everyone deserves to be loved- it is a good feeling.

Outside of the Capital Athletic Conference, who or what is your favorite sports person or team (and why)?   Tim Tebow! He is such a strong person- a man who can honor the Lord and play in the NFL just baffles me. He isn’t bad looking either...

Name three (3) people, real or fictional, living or dead, that you'd like to have dinner with (and why)?   I would love to have dinner with Marilyn Monroe! Her beauty is stunning and I would love to listen to anything she had to say! She was never a size zero and owned that fact, which I love; she wasn’t born into fame either. The second person would be Esther, the woman from the Bible. I love reading that story, but I would love even more to hear her side! I would be honored to eat with such a beautiful, Godly woman. And lastly, but certainly not least, I would love to have dinner with my family (yeah it’s not one person, I know). I consider my family as God’s gift to me, and even though we are pretty small I love being together. My grandmother, mother, and aunt make the best holiday meals!
