Salisbury Survives Shootout Vs. Frostburg State To Join Mary Washington In Advancing To CAC Women's Soccer Semifinals
It took double overtime and six rounds of a shootout for fourth-seeded Salisbury to survive the challenge of fifth-seeded Frostburg State and advance to the semifinal round of the 2013 CAC Women's Soccer Championship Tournament.
In the other first-round battle, sixth-seeded Mary Washington upended third-seeded St. Mary's, 1-0.
It was the third-straight meeting between the Sea Gulls and Bobcats that the game ended in a draw. In the 2012 title match at SU, FSU won the CAC crown in a shootout after a scoreless draw. Earlier this season, the teams also played to a scoreless draw at FSU. Saturday's first-round playoff battle ended with a 1-1 score - both teams scored in the second half.
The result lifts Salisbury into the conference semifinals against top-seeded Christopher Newport Wednesday (11/6), beginning at 7 p.m. CNU is a first-year member of the CAC and ranked fifth in the NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region. Salisbury has appeared in the CAC title match in each of the past two seasons.
Adding to the semifinal drama will be the return of Salisbury head coach Kwame Lloyd, who was the CNU head coach from 2001-2008. CNU won the regular-season meeting by a 2-0 count.
In the other first-round match at St. Mary's, UMW sophomore Lizzie Weast scored in the ninth minute of play, and the defense held up to give the Eagles the 1-0 win.
The sixth-seeded Eagles will play at second-seeded York Wednesday afternoon in the second half of a men's/women's playoff DH that begins at 11:30 a.m. The women's game is tentatively scheduled to start approximately 2 p.m. York, the ninth-ranked team in the South Atlantic Region, outdueled UMW in overtime during the regular-season, 3-2.
