Five CAC women's soccer players earned All-South Atlantic Region honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Wednesday, headlined by St. Mary's Gillian Sawyer on the first team.
Landing on the second team were the Christopher Newport duo of Victoria Perry and Kira Warner along with Clair Kostelnik of St. Mary's. Frostburg State's Brooke Longo rounded out the CAC honorees as a third team selection.
Sawyer, the CAC Player of the Year, earned her first all-region accolade. The senior led the CAC in goals (18) and points (40) and ranked 22nd in Division III in goals per game (1.06), 25th in goals, and 28th in points per game (2.35). She was also second in the conference with a team-best four game-winning goals. In the St. Mary's record books, Sawyer's single-season marks rank tied for first in game-winners, second in goals and tied for third in points. On the Seahawks' career list, she ranks third in career game-winning goals (9), fifth in career goals (32).
Kostelnik notched her first career all-region award after earning All-CAC First Team honors in 2015. She paced the league with 10 assists and finished second on the team with six goals and 22 points. Her 10 helpers are second on the St. Mary's single-season record list. In Division III, Kostelnik owned the 20th-best assists per game average (0.59).
CNU's Perry earned all-region honors for the second time in her career after garnering second team laurels as a sophomore in 2014. She became just the third player in CNU women's soccer lore to post back-to-back 30-point seasons, finishing her junior year with a team-high 32 points and 13 goals scored. She added six assists while putting away five game-winning goals. She now ranks second at CNU all-time in career winners, with 12. The 2014 CAC Player of the Year earned first team All-Conference honors for the second consecutive season after ranking second in the league in goals and total points. She also led the CAC in total shots, with 90, while putting 49 attempts on-frame. Perry continues to rapidly ascend the career scoring charts at CNU, ranking third in assists (19), fifth in total points (77) and tied for sixth in goals scored (29).
Warner, a sophomore, picked up her first career all-region nod. One of just five players to start all 20 games this season, Warner led the team in minutes as a center back of a stingy defense. She played in 1,709 of a possible 1,833 minutes, helping the Captains post nine shutouts and a 0.93 goals against average. The CNU back line held opponents to just 9.5 shots per game. The 2014 CAC Rookie of the Year has collected second team All-Conference honors in each of her two years with the Captains.
Longo picked up her first all-region honor after starting all 20 games for the Bobcats this season in the midfield. She totaled five goals and four assists, earned a spot on the All-CAC First Team for her efforts and helped to lead the Bobcats to the CAC tournament. The senior midfielder scored two game-winning goals for the Bobcats.
