Christopher Newport's Gabby Gillis Named First Team All-America by United Soccer Coaches

United Soccer Coaches Women's All-America Team

After leading the Christopher Newport women's soccer team through one of the finest seasons in program history, junior midfielder Gabby Gillis has been named the Captains' first ever first team All-American by the United Soccer Coaches.

A breakout campaign for the junior midfielder culminated in the top honor after Gillis put together one of the finest seasons in program history. Named the Capital Athletic Conference Player of the Year after leading the Captains to regular season and tournament championships in 2017, Gillis led the league in scoring with 34 points this season. She finished the year with 14 goals and six assists while leading the league in total shots with 93. That total ranks second all-time at CNU while her 34-point season is tied for the seventh finest in CNU history.

In addition to her first team All-American nod, Gillis collected first team All-Region and first team All-Conference honors as well.

A game-changing offensive and defensive player in the center midfield, Gillis helped the Captains post one of the most dominant seasons all-time at CNU on both ends of the field. Behind Gillis' offensive output, the Captains broke the program record for goals scored in a season (77) and total points (212). On the defensive end, the junior midfielder helped CNU hold opponents to just over six shots per game while posting a record-tying 12 shutouts and record-breaking 0.56 goals-against average. The Captains set program records for wins in a season (19), fewest losses (1), and overall winning percentage (.929).

One of six juniors listed on the first team, Gillis was one of only four CNU players to start all 21 games this season and ranked fourth on the team in minutes played. The constant threat in the midfield has started all 62 games in her career and continues to climb the all-time scoring charts at CNU with 23 goals, 9 assists, and 55 career points.

Gillis helped CNU post a 19-1-1 overall record in 2017, winning the CAC regular season crown with a perfect 9-0-0 mark in conference play. The Captains would go on to capture the tournament championship and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season.
