YORK, Pa. -- Christopher Newport sophomore Sam Porter was named the CAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Feb. 8, 2016.

Christopher Newport sophomore Sam Porter was named the CAC Player of the Week after averaging 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.0 steals per game in a 3-0 week for the Captains. Porter began the week with 12 points and four steals in just 18 minutes at Frostburg State. She followed that up with a near triple-double at Salisbury, posting 15 points, 10 rebounds and eight steals. Finally, she added her second straight double-double with a season-high 20 points and 10 rebounds at Wesley. Porter's week helped the Captains clinch at least one home game in the CAC Tournament.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Christopher Newport broke into the D3hoops.com Week 8 national rankings at No. 23, while Mary Washington (9), York (3) and Marymount (1) received votes ... CNU was also ranked for the first time in the WBCA / USA TODAY Coaches' Poll, at No. 24 ... First-place Marymount (12-1 CAC) continues to hold a one-game edge over CNU and UMW atop the CAC standings ... CNU has now won 14 straight, matching its longest winning streak under head coach Bill Broderick ... Courtney Young averaged 11.7 points and 8.3 rebounds per contest over a three-game stretch for Frostburg State last week. She turned in a double-double with 20 points and 12 rebounds in an OT loss to St. Mary's ... Junior Brianne Comden led Mary Washington to three CAC wins, averaging 21.3 PPG while shooting 62.8% from the floor and 76.9% from the free throw line. She scored 18 in a win over York, 25 in a win at St. Mary's, and 21 in a victory at Salisbury. She made nine field goals in each of UMW's wins this week, and grabbed 5.7 rebounds per game as well ... Marymount freshman Tyffani McQueen guided the Saints to a 3-0 week, leading the team with 12.3 points per game behind 53.3% shooting, 71.4% from behind the arc, while adding 4.7 rebounds, 1.3 assists, and 2.7 steals per game. She notched a career- and game-high 16 points including the game-winning three-pointer against York on Saturday for the two-point victory ... Nina Haller poured in a career- and game-best 29 points in St. Mary's only win of the week against Frostburg State. Haller recorded her eighth double-double of the season as well with 11 rebounds while matching a season-best with five blocks ... Southern Virginia's Shelby Winsor posted a career-high 20 points with 11 rebounds in a win at Penn State Harrisburg, her third double-double this season. She leads the team in RPG, ranks second in FG%, and third in PPG ...  Wesley earned an important road win at Southern Virginia on Monday evening before returning home to face York on Wednesday and CNU on Saturday. In both games against two of the CAC's best, Wesley held second-half leads but could not hold onto them as they let a pair of upsets slip away. Alexus Stroud provided an offensive spark for Wesley, setting career-high scoring marks in two consecutive games and averaging 19.3 points per game. Brionna Johnson averaged a double-double last week, netting 13.3 points and grabbing 11.7 rebounds per game. The Wolverines travel to Salisbury on Wednesday and Frostburg State on Saturday. The Wolverines are currently one game back of a playoff position.
