Junior volleyball player Carle Ax has been named to the Capital One 2011 Academic All-America Division III Volleyball Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). A second-team honoree, Ax is the first-ever player from Wesley College to be named an Academic All-American by CoSIDA.

Simply put, Salisbury junior volleyball setter Carley Todd had a great year in 2011. In addition to leading the Sea Gulls to the CAC regular season and playoff championships, Todd was named to the All-CAC team for the second-straight year, was voted as the conference Player of the Year, earned first-team All-Region and third-team All-American. The Sea Gulls finished with a 32-4 overall record and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament – Salisbury’s second national tournament appearance in her three seasons. Salisbury and Stevenson stormed through the volleyball regular season, each posting 31-3 overall records, finishing 1-2 in the regular-season standings, playing for the CAC title and advancing to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. The Sea Gulls and Mustangs also combined for eight of the 14 players on the 2011 All-CAC team and swept the three individual post-season awards.

Salisbury and Stevenson, the top two CAC teams in the regular season and the finalists in the conference playoffs, are both going to advance to the 2011 NCAA Tournament. As the CAC playoff champion, Salisbury gained the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. Stevenson, which boasts the same overall record at Salisbury (31-3), gained an at-large bid to the post-season championship.

St. Mary’s senior middle blocker GENA HLAVINKA (Gaithersburg, Md./T.S. Wootton) was named CAC Volleyball Player of the Week after the Seahawks to four wins in five matches, including a pair of CAC triumphs that clinched the No. 6 seed for SMC. In 17 sets, Hlavinka contributed 61 kills and a .363 hitting percentage. She also added two assists and three service aces to the attack while providing strong defense with eight digs and 17 total blocks, including three solo stops.
