Salisbury Wins 16th CAC Field Hockey Title With A 5-1 Win Over Wesley In Championship Match

The No. 1 Salisbury University field hockey team reigns supreme in the Capital Athletic Conference after defeating Wesley College, 5-1, in the CAC championship match on Saturday evening at Sea Gull Stadium. This is Salisbury's 16th CAC championship title.
Senior Tara McGovern sparked the offense, scoring in the 12th minute, collecting a shot off the pads and slamming it into the back of the goal for her fifth goal of the season. Ten minutes later, McGovern assisted junior Kristina Fusco, as Fusco flicked a shot from the left side into the upper right corner of the goal. To end the half, senior Caitlin Walker collected a pass from McGovern and put home her ninth goal of the season, giving the Gulls a 3-0 advantage.
In the second half, Salisbury (17-1) quickly found their groove, scoring off a penalty corner in the 39th minute of play. Senior Courtney Webster took the initial shot, saved by Wesley back Madison Leone, and senior Alison Bloodsworth collected the rebound and ripped the fourth goal of the night into the backboard.
With 20 minutes remaining in the half, Webster and junior Erica Henderson successfully sliced through Wesley's defense for a two-on-one with the goalkeeper. Webster dished the ball to the left and Henderson blasted a shot, giving Salisbury a 5-0 lead.
In the 69th minute, Wesley (12-9) scored off the stick of Rachel Joyner to end the game 5-1.
