Top Two Field Hockey Seeds - Salisbury And Wesley - Advance To Saturday's CAC Championship Match

In 2010, Wesley's field hockey team handed Salisbury its first-ever CAC playoff loss in the semifinal round to earn a berth in the conference championship match.  This year, the Wolverines will meet the Sea Gulls in the title game Saturday at Salisbury.

The Wolverines downed Salisbury in last year's playoffs by a 1-0 margin to earn a chance to play Mary Washington for the 2010 title.  This year, Wesley defeated Mary Washington, again by a 1-0 count, to set up Saturday's trip to Salisbury.

The top-seeded Sea Gulls, the CAC regular-season champions who are co-ranked No. 1 in the country, defeated fourth-seeded York in Wednesday's other semifinal, 6-0.  Salisbury won 15-straight CAC titles from 1995 to 2009.

Saturday's game time will be announced Thursday.

Wednesday at Dover, Del., Wesley's Abigail Hill scored midway through the first half and the Wolverines defense did the rest in a 1-0 win over Mary Washington in the CAC semifinals.

The game was scoreless until Danielle Tearl sent a hit into the circle that Hill redirected into the cage for a 1-0 lead at 23:24.  The Wolverines nearly had a second goal, but the Eagles' Lisa Charney picked up a defensive save in the 42nd minute.

Charney sent a pair of hits in on penalty corners during the second half that found the back of the cage, but the Wesley defense prevented any redirections and Charney's hits came from outside the circle.   The Wolverines also survived a penalty corner as time expired to pick up the win and advance to the conference title game for the second straight season.

Elizabeth Groom made two saves for Wesley to pick up the shutout.  Emily Badis stopped three shots for Mary Washington.

At Salisbury, the No. 1-ranked Sea Gulls flew past York as four different players score in the 6-0 victory.

Salisbury (16-1) dominated from the opening whistle, scoring in the first four minutes of play as sophomore Emily Voshell put the go-ahead goal into the cage with a shot from the right side of the circle. The goal was Voshell's first of the season.

Junior Erica Henderson earned her third hat trick of the season, her second against York, scoring the next three goals. The Westover, Md. native's first goal came in the eighth minute as she finished off a pass from senior Alison Bloodsworth and just 96 seconds later she slammed a pass from senior Caitlin Walker past the Spartan goalkeeper. Henderson would score once more to give the Gulls a 4-0 advantage at halftime.

Senior Tara McGovern and freshman Summer Washburn connected off a penalty corner, as Washburn centered a pass to McGovern who sent home the fifth goal of the game, her fourth of the season. Senior Courtney Webster sent in the final goal of the game at the 62:38 mark off a pass from sophomore Hannah Castelow.

With the win senior goalkeeper Anna Cooke picks up her 16th victory and eighth shutout of the season. Cooke now has 33 career shutouts, the most in the history of the Salisbury program, passing Joanna Fenske (1998-2001).
