Salisbury Edges Skidmore in OT to Advance to NCAA Field Hockey National Championship; Christopher Newport Falls to Bowdoin
Salisbury defeated Skidmore 3-2 in overtime to advance to Sunday's NCAA field hockey national championship game, while Christopher Newport saw its record-breaking season come on an end with a 4-1 defeat to Bowdoin in Friday's other semifinal contest.
In a back-and-forth game, the Sea Gulls came out on top after trailing for much of the contest. Knotted at 2-2 in overtime, Yumi Kim's penalty stroke propelled Salisbury to the final game for the first time since 2009.
In the first semifinal matchup, Christopher Newport (21-2) came out firing with a score from Lauren Cheatham less than five minutes into the contest, but Bowdoin quickly responded just 15 seconds later to tie things up and went on to win, 4-1. The final four appearance marked the first time in program history that the Captains had reached the semifinal round.
Salisbury (17-3) and Bowdoin (17-3) will meet in the championship round on Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va.
