Salisbury's Horner, Christopher Newport’s Abendschoen Earn C2C Field Hockey Player of the Week Accolades
The Coast-To-Coast Athletic Conference (C2C) has announced its weekly awards following the first week of the 2024 field hockey season. Salisbury's McKenna Horner earned C2C Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Christopher Newport's Katie Abendschoen claimed C2C Defensive Player of the Week honors.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: McKenna Horner, Salisbury
Horner tallied a team-high five points in the Sea Gulls opening two games with two goals and an assist on the weekend. Had a goal and an assist in the 6-1 win over No. 21 Swarthmore.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Katie Abendschoen, Christopher Newport
Katie Abendschoen played all 60 minutes while anchoring CNU's defensive unit, which blanked Denison during a 4-0 win in the season opener on Friday. During the contest, the Captains did not surrender a single shot, marking only the third time since 2019 that an opponent was completely silenced. Meanwhile, the Big Red managed only six total circle entries, and Abendschoen helped erase half of those deep runs. The senior broke up a rush along the end line in the 28th minute before intercepting a pass along the right side of the arc in the 30th. Then, in the second half, she picked off another feed on the interior during Denison's final offensive stand in the 57th minute. Meanwhile, on the other end of the field, Abendschoen served as the stopper on the offensive penalty corner unit and picked up an assist on CNU's final goal. That marked her 50th career point, making her just the 19th Captain to reach that benchmark. Additionally, Friday's game was her 57th consecutive start, moving her to ninth on the program's all-time "Iron Man" list.
HONORABLE MENTION
OFFENSIVE: Caroline Hughlett, Christopher Newport
DEFENSIVE: Hannah Johnson, Salisbury
C2C HIGHLIGHTS
Caroline Hughlett played a role in each of Christopher Newport's first three goals during a 4-0 win over Denison on Friday. In the season opener, she kicked off her sophomore campaign with the squad's first goal, which marked her fifth career game-winning tally. Later, she added an assist on back-to-back strikes during a two-minute window early in the fourth quarter, which put the game out of reach. That was her first career multi-assist performance… Hannah Johnson played all 120 minutes for Salisbury in their opening two games. She led a defense that only allowed one goal all weekend.
