Frostburg State Sophomore Carvell Akuffo and Christopher Newport Senior Sammy Blosser Named CAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week

YORK, Pa. -- Frostburg State sophomore Carvell Akuffo and Christopher Newport senior Sammy Blosser were named the CAC Men's Soccer Player of the Week for Oct. 31, 2016.

Frostburg State sophomore Carvell Akuffo was selected as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week after notching a goal and an assist in the Bobcats' 3-2 win over Penn State Harrisburg in the first round of the CAC Tournament. Akuffo started the scoring less than a minute into regulation to give Frostburg State an early 1-0 edge, and later assisted on the eventual game-winner from Mukor Harris in the 79th minute. 

Defensive Player of the Week

Christopher Newport senior Sammy Blosser was selected as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week after helping the Captains clinch the top seed in the CAC Tournament with a 2-1 victory over Marymount in the regular season finale. Blosser and the CNU defense held the Saints to just two total shots and one shot on goal. Blosser also assisted on the game-tying goal, and made a key defensive play that led to Patrick Burns' game-winning score.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

The CAC Tournament started on Saturday, with both road teams picking up first-round victories ... Fifth-seeded Frostburg State defeated fourth-seeded Penn State Harrisburg 3-2, and sixth-seeded York downed third-seeded St. Mary's 1-0 ... Frostburg State will travel to top-seeded Christopher Newport for Tuesday's semifinals at 6 p.m., while York will travel to second-seeded Mary Washington for the other semifinal at 3:30 p.m. ... CNU senior Jimmy Grace and sophomore Bobby Seifert were named CoSIDA Academic All-District selections. Senior Patrick Burns scored the game-winning goal for CNU against Marymount, helping the Captains secure their first outright regular season title since joining the CAC. For the season, Burns now has 13 points on five goals and three assists ... Freshman Idrissa Barrie scored a pair of goals that tied and won the game for Mary Washington in a 3-2 win over Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday. The scores were his second and third of the season, and helped UMW to the No. 2 seed in the CAC Tournament ... St. Mary's senior Nick Tait netted the game-winning goal and an assist in the regular-season finale win over York. Tait wraps up his outstanding career fourth all-time in game-winning goals (9) and fifth in points (88), goals (33), and assists (22). He is also tied for first in games played (74) and leaves as the record holder in minutes played (5,715) ... Kendrick Michel had a big showing in the Salisbury's lone game of the week. With the Gulls needing a win to keep their playoff hopes alive, the senior scored both of the team's goals in a 2-1 victory ... Southern Virginia's Tyler Mcelwee scored the only goal for the Knights this week. He led the team this season with six season goals and 38 shots ... In a rematch of last year's CAC semifinals, York avenged last season's defeat with a 1-0 triumph at St. Mary's. The Spartans received the game's lone goal from Nathan Bilbie in the 88th minute off an assist from Barak Amige
