YORK, Pa. -- Salisbury junior Eric Halton and Frostburg State senior J.R. Lowery collected CAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week accolades for May 2, 2017.

Salisbury junior Eric Halton was selected as the CAC Track Athlete of the Week after posting the 10th-fastest time in the nation in the 400 meters at the historic Penn Relays. Halton raced to a time of 47.93, which placed him second overall. Halton also helped the 4x400-meter relay team to a first-place finish in their heat at the Penn Relays, coming home in a time of 3:21.51. 

 

Field Athlete of the Week

J.R. Lowery | Frostburg State | Sr.

Frostburg State senior J.R. Lowery earned CAC Field Athlete of the Week for the third time this year after breaking the CAC and Frostburg State records and recording Division III's longest throw of the year in the shot put at the Penn Relays. Lowery's mark of 18.05 meters broke the previous mark of 17.94 meters set by Salisbury's Brandon Fugett in 2009. He is the lone thrower to pass 18 meters in DIII this year In the hammer throw, Lowery took 11th place and defeated eight Division I throwers with a toss of 54.84 meters. It was a season-best distance and landed him in the ECAC Championships for the seventh time in seven meets this spring.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Christopher Newport captured its second straight CAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Championship with nine individual titles in the 20 events on April 21-22 at Mary Washington ... Combining the indoor and outdoor seasons, CNU has now captured four consecutive CAC track & field crowns ... Christopher Newport's Ryan Scott and Tyler Wingard along with Mary Washington's Jeff Gibson collected the top awards to headline the 2017 All-CAC Men's Outdoor Track & Field Team ... Scott, a junior, claimed Outdoor Athlete of the Year honors for the first time after also being named the Indoor Athlete of the Year this past winter. He took home a trio of first-place finishes in the 100, 200, and 110 hurdles, and was also a part of the silver-medal 4x400 relay for the Captains. Scott, who was Outdoor Rookie of the Year in 2015, won the 200 for the second time in his career. It marks the first time that a CNU athlete has won Athlete of the Year at the outdoor meet ... Wingard secured Coach of the Year accolades in a vote of his peers for the second straight outdoor meet after guiding the Captains to their second outdoor title in a row ... Gibson was named Rookie of the Year following his championship-meet record performance in the 10,000 meters. Gibson became the sixth Eagle to capture Rookie of the Year honors ... Six CAC teams were in action last week, including several at the historic Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pa. ... Salisbury's Jeffrey McInnis posted a seventh-place finish in the long jump after posting a jump of 21' 8.75" at the Lions Invitational this weekend hosted by The College of New Jersey.
