FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Salisbury's Michael Van Gieson & Penn State Harrisburg's Cameron Yon were selected as CAC Men's Track & Field Athletes of the Week for April 16, 2019. 


Track Athlete of the Week

Salisbury junior sprinter Michael Van Gieson turned in solid performances at the Eastern Shore Challenge earning two top-10 finishes. Van Gieson started his day with a seventh-place finish in the 200-meter dash coming home in a time of 22.51 seconds. He then out dueled two other teammates to take home second in the 400-meter dash crossing the finish line in a mark of 48.76 seconds. That time of 48.76 currently ranks Van Gieson 18th in the country in Division III.

Penn State Harrisburg's Cameron Yon continued his push towards the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with another massive effort at Bucknell's Bison Invitational over the weekend. The senior posted five tosses of 51-plus meters in the discus throw, with his top effort of 55.78 meters ranking second only to himself in NCAA Division III. His throw at Bucknell earned him a runner-up finish in the event, with a thrower from Division I Army the only one to best him. Yon's effort bested those of a number of Division I and II athletes from school's including Penn State, Buffalo, Cornell, Army, Bucknell, Binghamton, Kutztown and Shippensburg. This marks the second CAC honor for Yon this year.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Frostburg's Robert Romano won an individual event for the fourth-consecutive meet during the outdoor campaign with a victory in the 1,500 meter run with a season-best 3:55.67 at the Messiah Invitational ... His time bests his previous season-best of 3:56.49 that ranked 27th in the country coming into Saturday's action...Frostburg's John Kerns won the weight throw with a season-best effort of 51.62 meters (169 feet, 4 inches) at the Messiah Invitational, surpassing his previous best of 59.95 meters that ranked 42nd in nation ... Kerns was also third in the discus (43.35 meters) and seventh in the shot put (14.02 meters)...Christopher Newport's Nick Tolarchyk posted a victory in the 3000-steeplechase during the Eastern Shore Challenge on Saturday at Salisbury. During the race, the freshman posted a time of 10:11.09, which bested the runner-up by over eight full seconds. It also established a new PR...York's Benjamin Russell led the Spartans to a fifth place finish at the Messiah Invitational this past weekend. Russell had York's best finish at the invitational as he placed second in the 3000 meter steeplechase with a time of 9:59.72. His time is currently the third best time in the CAC so far this year...York's Christian Betancourt helped lead the Spartans to a fifth place finish at the Messiah Invitational this weekend. Betancourt finished fourth in the pole vault as he had a best height of 3.60 meters (11' 9.5"). Betancourt sits in fifth place in the CAC with that height...Salisbury junior Jeffrey McInnis turned in a solid performance at the Eastern Shore Challenge hosted by Salisbury University. McInnis garnered two top three finishes including a victory in the long jump. He posted a jump of 21' 10" to win the long jump and claim the Sea Gulls fourth victory of the day. He went on to finish third in the triple jump with a distance of 43' 1.5."...Mary Washington's Luke Robertson had a big day at the Johns Hopkins/Loyola Invitational, as he was first in the shot put at 38 feet, 6.25 inches, as well as first in the hammer throw at 147 feet, nine inches. Rajai Walton also took first in the triple jump.
