Capital Athletic Conference Announces Weekly Award Winners

NORTH HUNTINGDON, Pa. -- Salisbury junior guard Monica Merkel (Walkersville, MD/St. John's), Hood junior guard Ryan Junghans (Derwood, MD/Magruder), Gallaudet freshman Carlisle Robinson (Carmel, IN/Carmel) and Mary Washington freshman Brad Dunn (Williamsburg, VA/Bruton) have been named the Capital Athletic Conference Athletes of the Week in their respective sports for Jan. 13, 2008.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Salisbury Jr. G MONICA MERKEL is the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13, 2008, after scoring more than 20 points in two CAC games for the Sea Gulls. Merkel tallied 23 scores, ripped down six rebounds, dished out four assists, registered three steals and blocked a shot in SU's win over Gallaudet. Earlier in the week, the Walkersville, Md., native had 21 points and eight boards in a two-point loss vs. Wesley.

MEN'S BASKETBALL

Hood Jr. G RYAN JUNGHANS was named the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 13, 2008, after averaging 25.0 points and connecting on 54.8% from the field, including a 51.9 percentage from three-point range, in three Blazers' victories. Junghans knocked down a season-high 36 points, including a school-record nine three-point goals, in a four-point win over Marymount. He has scored 20 points in eight of Hood's 15 games this season.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING

Gallaudet Fr. CARLISLE ROBINSON is the Capital Athletic Conference Women's Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 13, 2008, after winning three individual events in a non-legaue triumph over the College of Notre Dame (Md.). Robinson, who has already broken GU records in the 50 breaststroke and 200 breaststroke this season, topped the field in the 400 IM, the 100 butterfly and the 100 breaststroke against CND.

MEN'S SWIMMING

Mary Washington Fr. BRAD DUNN is the Capital Athletic Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week for Jan. 13, 2008, after winning two individual events and contributing to a gold-medal relay in the Eagles' CAC victory over St. Mary's. Dunn touched the wall first in the 1,000 freestyle (10:28.58), then doubled by winning the 100 free (51.34) and followed as a member of the top 400 freestyle relay team.
