NFL Hall of Famer and Washington Redskins legend Darrell Green will join the University of Mary Washington athletic department as a special assistant for student-athlete development and public relations. Green, who addressed the student-athletes, staff, and guests at the department’s annual athletic banquet on Thursday night, will begin immediately as a member of the Eagles athletic department.

“This feels like home to me”, said Green on Thursday. “I came from a small college – Texas A&I – and this is me… This is what I am, and this is what I am comfortable with. Having visitied with Ken (Tyler), President Hurley, and this beautiful campus and community, I can say this feels like home.”

“What an incredible pleasure it is to announce that NFL Hall of Famer Darrell Green will be joining our team as a staff member beginning tonight”, said UMW Athletic Director Ken Tyler. “He is a winner, plain and simple, both on and off the field, and we can’t wait to see the results of his involvement with our department. It is TRULY a great day to be an Eagle as we welcome a legend of sport to our team.”

Green is best known as a former cornerback with the Washington Redskins. During his record-setting 20 year career with the team he came to be known and lovingly referred to as “Mr. Redskin.” His on field accomplishments include two Super Bowl victories, seven selections to the Pro Bowl, and four NFL Fastest Man competitions.

In 1991, he was the World’s Fastest Athlete and even at the age of 40, Green ran the 40-yard dash in 4.2 seconds. In 2010, he ran a 4.4 40 on his 50th birthday. He has received a number of awards, including the NFL’s most prestigious Man of the Year award in 1996. In 2008, he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Darrell Green is also well known for his work off the field. As a proponent of education, service and moral development, he founded The Darrell Green Youth Life Foundation (DGYLF) in 1988 and continues to oversee its operations. The DGYLF provides a wide-range of academic development and values-based education programs through Darrell Green Youth Life Learning Centers (DGYLLC) operating in select urban, suburban, and rural neighborhoods.

The first Center was established in 1993 in Northeast Washington, D.C. and still operates today along with centers in Southeast, DC and Upper Marlboro, MD. Each center equips youth to address obstacles they face while training them to provide quality leadership for their peers, family members, and their community. With affiliate centers in Richmond, VA and Nashville, TN, the DGYLF will continue to expand its network of centers across America.

Because of his commitment to serving others, Green founded the Darrell Green Business Council for Youth to recruit top business leaders to lend their expertise and services to DGYLF’s mission. And in 2000, President Bush appointed Green Chairman of the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation. As an avid businessman, Green owns and operates several businesses.

In 1997, he established Darrell Green Enterprises, Inc., a marketing company that facilitates opportunities for Green and other athletes and manages www.DarrellGreen.com. In 2000, Green created Darrell Green Holdings, LLC to manage his business interests which include Intekras, a SBA-certified 8(a) company offering integrated solutions in three primary disciplines: Information Security, National Security and Defense Systems; and Trusted Solutions Group, a hub zone company that specializes in providing training and workforce development solutions to government and industry.

Green completed his Bachelor of Science degree in general studies and social science at St. Paul’s College in Lawrenceville, Virginia. In 1999, Marymount University recognized him for his extraordinary humanitarian endeavors and conferred upon him the honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degree. In 2002, George Washington University and St. Paul’s College awarded Green his second and third honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters degrees.

Darrell and his wife Jewell have three children: Jerrell, Jared, and Joi.
