The York College men's and women's basketball teams took a pledge to help in the fight against cancer this season. All together, the teams raised a total of $9,062.

The Spartan women collected $2,300 during their "Play 4 Kay" Day. The proceeds from the game went to the Kay Yow Cancer Foundation. 

The remaining $6,762 came from the combination of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament held by both teams in December and the "3-point attack" campaign that ran throughout the season. The proceeds from these events were donated to the American Cancer Society.

"This is a cause that I am very passionate about," said head women's basketball coach Betsey Witman. "Everyone in my immediate family has either battled or is currently battling some type of cancer." 

After York's former men's basketball coach, Jeff Gamber, retired, Coach Witman knew that she wanted to continue the efforts to raise money for the American Cancer Society.

Witman was happy that the new men's basketball head coach, Matt Hunter, wanted to jump on board right away and raise money for the fight against cancer too. 

"My dad is a cancer survivor," said Coach Hunter. "I believe that everyone has been touched by this horrible disease in one way or another."

Both coaches are incredibly proud of the amount of money their teams were able to raise this season and are thankful to everyone who donated.  Next season, the Spartans look to continue their efforts and donate even more money.
