St. Mary's Senior Gillian Sawyer and Christopher Newport Freshman Keiley McCarthy Earn CAC Women's Soccer Weekly Awards

YORK, Pa. -- St. Mary's senior Gillian Sawyer and Christopher Newport freshman Keiley McCarthy were named the CAC Women's Soccer Players of the Week for Oct. 31, 2016.

St. Mary's senior Gillian Sawyer was tabbed as the CAC Offensive Player of the Week after scoring three times last week, including both goals of the Seahawks' first-round playoff victory. Sawyer opened the week with a goal in a 3-2 loss to York, before powering the Seahawks past Salisbury in the CAC first round with pair of goals, including the game-winner in the 89th minute.

Christopher Newport freshman Keiley McCarthy was awarded as the CAC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this year after helping the Captains lock up the top seed in the CAC Tournament with a shutout win in their regular season finale. McCarthy and the Captains' defense limited Marymount to just three shots in a 5-0 victory, giving CNU its fourth-straight CAC regular season title and 10th shutout of the year. She also contributed on the offensive side of the field with a goal off a corner kick.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

In the first round of the CAC Tournament on Saturday, St. Mary's and Mary Washington each defended their home fields to advance to Wednesday's semifinals ... Third-seeded St. Mary's defeated sixth-seeded Salisbury 2-1 and will travel to second-seeded Frostburg State for Wednesday's semifinals at 6 p.m. ... In a rematch of last year's CAC title game, fourth-seeded Mary Washington downed fifth-seeded York 2-0 at the Battleground. The Eagles received a first-half goal from Lizzie Brooks and a second-half tally from Katie Rauch and a shutout in net from junior Haley Randall en route to the win. UMW will travel to top-seeded Christopher Newport for a 6 p.m. semifinal tilt on Wednesday ... CNU senior Victoria Perry and Wesley senior Natalie Trujillo both earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors for the second consecutive season ... Salisbury's Jenna Taylor scored two goals for Salisbury against Wesley, helping them secure a trip to the CAC Tournament ... Southern Virginia's Maia MacArthur scored the only goal for the Knights this week for her second career goal ... York's Maxine Herman scored the tying and then the game-winning goal in a 3-2 overtime win in the regular season finale against St. Mary's on Wednesday. Herman finished the year with a team-leading 17 points on eight goals and one assist, including a team-best three game-winning goals.
