Christopher Newport Sweeps 2016-17 CAC Commissioner's Cup Trophies
YORK, Pa. - Christopher Newport secured 12 titles among the 21 conference sports to finish atop the standings in all three categories of the 2016-17 CAC all-sports awards competition. The Captains swept the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award, the Men's Commissioner's Award, and the Women's Commissioner's Award.
Christopher Newport, which added four top-three finishes to its 12 team championships, collected 107.0 points in 10 men's sports and 111.5 points in 11 women's sports for a winning total of 218.5 points in the hunt for the 2016-17 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award.
Christopher Newport captured team championships in men's cross country, men's soccer, women's soccer, men's basketball, women's basketball, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's golf, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, softball, and men's tennis.
It marks the third CAC all-sports trophy for Christopher Newport since joining the conference in 2013-14. The Captains' combined 218.5 point total is the highest in the history of the all-sports award competition. The Women's Commissioner's Award is the second-straight and third overall for the Captains, while they secured the Men's Commissioner's Award for the first time.
Mary Washington placed second in all three categories with titles in volleyball, men's and women's swimming, and women's tennis. The Eagles totaled 194.0 points in the all-sports standings, with 104.5 points on the women's side and 89.5 points on the men's side.
Salisbury finished third in the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award standings with a total of 181.5, edging out York by just two points for third place. The Sea Gulls won titles in field hockey, baseball, men's lacrosse, and women's lacrosse en route to a third-place standing in the Men's Commissioner's Cup (89.0) and fourth place in the Women's Commissioner's Cup (92.5).
York tallied 179.5 points to claim fourth place in the all-sports standings. The Spartans notched a team title in women's cross country and also placed among the top two in both genders in swimming and lacrosse. York finished third in the women's cup with 96.0 points and fourth in the men's cup at 83.5 points.
Just 15.5 points separated fifth through eighth place in the overall standings, with Frostburg State (fifth place, 92.5 points), Wesley (sixth place, 86.5 points), St. Mary's (seventh place, 83.5 points), and Marymount (eighth place, 77.0 points) in fifth through eighth, respectively.
Penn State Harrisburg finished in ninth place with 50.0 points, followed by Southern Virginia with 40.0 points.

Point System (Approved in June 2008)
The Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award and Commissioner’s Awards (Men’s and Women’s) point system implements the regularseason standings and playoff success for each team in the 21 conference championship sports to calculate the all-sports champion.
A “10-point base” is used in each sport that conducts a regular season and a championship tournament. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport:
10 teams (M&W Soccer, Volleyball, M&W Basketball, Baseball): 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
9 teams (M&W Lacrosse): 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-1
8 teams (Softball, M&W Tennis): 10-9-8-7-6-5-3-1
7 teams (Field Hockey): 10-9-8-7-6-5-1
Teams gain one additional point for each CAC playoff win for a maximum of 13 points in any sport (except baseball and softball, where final tournament finish determines playoff points awarded). Teams with byes receive a point for the bye only if the team wins its semifinal contest. If a team with a bye loses in the semifinal round, the extra “bye” point is not awarded. In baseball and softball, where teams can play more than 3 games in a double-elimination tournament format, the final three teams in the tournament receive playoff points on a 3 (champion) - 2 (runner-up) - 1 (semifinalist) basis.
In sports determined only by the championship competition, a 12-point system will be used. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport. Teams start with the “9-point base”, similar to sports that conduct a regular season and championship tournament. “Playoff points” are factored in, based on tournament standings, to give similar value potential for sports with regular-season and post-season competitions:
