Christopher Newport's Zach Campbell Receives CAC Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year

YORK, Pa. – Christopher Newport University senior cross country/track & field runner Zach Campbell (Berryville, Va./Clarke County) was honored by the Capital Athletic Conference athletic directors as the 2015-16 Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Campbell was a computer science major with a mathematics minor and graduated Magna Cum Laude with a 3.83 cumulative grade point average at Christopher Newport. He was recently named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District team for the second straight year. He is also a two-time USTFCCCA National All-Academic selection and three-time CAC All-Academic team recipient. A member of the Chi Alpha Sigma National College Athlete Honor Society, Campbell was the only computer science major at CNU to get Department High Honors this year.

Campbell was a four-year member of the Captains' cross country and track & field programs. In cross country, Campbell helped lead CNU to CAC Championships and appearances in the NCAA national meet in 2015 and 2016. In 2016, Campbell and the Captains became the first-ever CAC program to win the NCAA Regional Championship and registered the conference's highest ever finish at the NCAA Championships with an 11th-place showing.

He also competed in both indoor and outdoor track & field, helping CNU sweep the titles in both seasons each of the last two years. A five-time Nationals Qualifier, Campbell completed his career as a two-time All-American, earning the honor in the 1500 meters at the 2017 NCAA Outdoor Championships and contributing to the 2016 NCAA Indoor Distance Medley Relay squad for CNU. He owns CAC records in the outdoor 800 meters and the indoor Distance Medley Relay, and ranks second in CAC history in the indoor mile and outdoor 1500 meters.

He captured two conference titles (2016 Indoor DMR, 2015 Indoor DMR), was a seven-time all-conference honoree, and earned all-region accolades six times.

Campbell is the first CNU male student-athlete to win the CAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award since the Captains joined the conference in 2013-14. He is the fifth cross country/track & field athlete to receive the honor.

To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be a senior with a minimum 3.50 cumulative grade point average, demonstrate athletic success and be a major contributor to his program.
