Christopher Newport Sweeps CAC Commissioner's Cup Trophies for Second Straight Year
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - Christopher Newport captured 10 titles among the 22 conference sports to sweep all three categories of the Capital Athletic Conference all-sports award competition for the second-straight year. The Captains finished atop the standings in the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award, the Men's Commissioner's Award and the Women's Commissioner's Award.
In addition to their 10 team championships, the Captains compiled eight top-three finishes en route to a combined total of 233 points in the 2017-18 Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award standings. CNU totaled 129.0 points in 12 women's sports and 104.0 points in 10 men's sports to post comfortable advantages in all three scoring categories.
CNU notched team championships in men's cross country, field hockey, women's soccer, volleyball, men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, women's golf, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, and softball throughout the 2017-18 school year.
It marks the fourth CAC all-sports trophy for the Captains since joining the conference in 2013-14. The Captains' combined 233-point total is the highest in the history of the all-sports award competition. The Women's Commissioner's Award is the third-straight and fourth overall for the Captains, while they secured the Men's Commissioner's Award for the second time.
Mary Washington placed second overall with six CAC titles in men's soccer, men's swimming, women's swimming, men's golf, men's tennis, and women's tennis. The Eagles secured 193.0 points in the all-sports standings, with 92.5 on the men's side and 100.5 on the women's side. UMW finished second in the men's standings and third in the women's standings.
York landed in third place in the Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award rankings with 188.5 points. The Spartans won titles in women's cross country and men's basketball en route to second-place in the Women's Commissioner's Cup (101.5) and third in the Men's Commissioner's Cup (87.0).
Salisbury tallied 183.5 points to claim fourth place in the all-sports standings, rounding out a tight grouping of second through fourth place separated by less than 10 points. The Sea Gulls won CAC titles in three spring sports - baseball, men's lacrosse and women's lacrosse. SU finished fourth in both the men's (83.5) and women's (100.0) cup standings.
Spots two through four in the Women's Commissioner's Cup Award rankings was incredibly close, as just 1.5 points separated second-place York (101.5) from fourth-place Salisbury (100.0), with Mary Washington sandwiched between with 100.5 points.
Frostburg State finished in fifth place with 98.0 points in the overall standings, while less than 10 points separated sixth through eighth place. Southern Virginia, which finished 10th in last year's rankings, rose to a sixth-place finish with 79.0 points, followed by St. Mary's (73.0) and Wesley (69.5) in seventh and eighth, respectively.
Penn State Harrisburg finished in ninth place with 58.0 points, followed by Marymount with 55.5 points.

Point System (Approved in June 2008)
The Richard C. Cook All-Sports Award and Commissioner’s Awards (Men’s and Women’s) point system implements the regularseason standings and playoff success for each team in the 21 conference championship sports to calculate the all-sports champion.
A “10-point base” is used in each sport that conducts a regular season and a championship tournament. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport:
10 teams (M&W Soccer, Volleyball, M&W Basketball, Baseball): 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1
9 teams (M&W Lacrosse): 10-9-8-7-6-5-4-3-1
8 teams (Softball, M&W Tennis): 10-9-8-7-6-5-3-1
7 teams (Field Hockey): 10-9-8-7-6-5-1
Teams gain one additional point for each CAC playoff win for a maximum of 13 points in any sport (except baseball and softball, where final tournament finish determines playoff points awarded). Teams with byes receive a point for the bye only if the team wins its semifinal contest. If a team with a bye loses in the semifinal round, the extra “bye” point is not awarded. In baseball and softball, where teams can play more than 3 games in a double-elimination tournament format, the final three teams in the tournament receive playoff points on a 3 (champion) - 2 (runner-up) - 1 (semifinalist) basis.
In sports determined only by the championship competition, a 12-point system will be used. Points are awarded based on the number of teams sponsoring the sport. Teams start with the “9-point base”, similar to sports that conduct a regular season and championship tournament. “Playoff points” are factored in, based on tournament standings, to give similar value potential for sports with regular-season and post-season competitions:
