FREDERICKBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport seniors Cullen Monahan and Legend Hayes swept the CAC Men's Track & Field Athlete of the Week awards for April 24, 2018.

Christopher Newport senior Cullen Monahan was selected as the CAC Track Athlete of the Week for the third time this season after establishing a new CAC record in the 800 meters at the New Captains Classic on Saturday. Monahan won the event in 1:51.13, which shaved half a second off the previous mark of 1:51.63 set by Christopher Newport's Zach Campbell in 2017. Monahan's clocking also ranks second in the NCAA this year and stands as the second-best mark in CNU history. Along with his individual efforts, Monahan helped lead the 4x400-relay to a victory as well. During the event, the foursome finished in 3:17.13. That time leads the CAC and ranks sixth in the country this year. 

Field Athlete of the Week

Christopher Newport senior Legend Hayes was named the CAC Field Athlete of the Week for the second time this year after breaking the school record in the discus and posting the fourth-best mark in Division III at the New Captains Classic on Saturday. Hayes uncorked a 53.42-meter heave, eclipsing the previous CNU record mark of 50.81 meters which was established by current teammate Brendon Burrows. Along with his victorious performance in the discus, Hayes notched the meet's top mark by a Division III competitor in the shot put after posting a 14.41-meter distance.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Frostburg State sophomore John Kerns led the way at the Mason-Dixon Invitational at Gettysburg by qualifying for the ECACs and posting Frostburg's only victory on the day. Kerns took gold in the hammer throw with a 48.92-meter throw. It was his second-longest throw of the spring and qualified him in the event for the fifth-straight meet ... Mary Washington's Daniel Forjan had a good day at Gallaudet on Saturday, as he won the shot put at 15.35 meters, as well as the discus at 42.55 meters, with teammate Ripken Smith taking second at 39.79 meters. Smith won the hammer throw at 45.34, with Forjan taking third at 39.90 meters. Forjan will compete at the Penn Relays in the shot this weekend ... Penn State Harrisburg sophomore Alex White broke school records in the triple jump, high jump, and long jump this week. White cleared 2.04m in the high jump at the 2018 Mason-Dixon Invitational, which ranks first in the CAC and 16th nationally this spring. At the Shippensburg University Mid-Week, White recorded the top long jump in the conference so far this season with a leap of 7.07 meters. White is currently ranked 18th nationally in the event. White also broke the school record for the triple jump, traveling 13.55 meters ... Salisbury competed at the New Captains Classic. Duncan Ferrin set a new school record in the hammer throw (190'), surpassing the previous mark of 186'-7" that he set earlier this season ... Southern Virginia also competed at the New Captains Classic at CNU, with sophomore Derek Blasko winning the javelin with a lifetime best throw of 52.32 meters. He also placed fifth in the shot put (14.29m). Michael Myers extended his school records in both the 1,500 and 5,000-meter races, running a 4:03 in the 1,500 and a 15:27 in the 5,000 ... Wesley freshman Tre' Johnson picked up his third consecutive win in the triple jump with a mark of 14.41 meters (47-3.5) at the Widener Invitational. His jump ranks 15th in Division III.
