FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Christopher Newport senior Makenzie Fancher was selected as the CAC Women's Basketball Player of the Week for Jan. 15, 2017.

Christopher Newport senior Makenzie Fancher was selected as the CAC Player of the Week after leading the Captains to a pair of CAC victories with averages of 10.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 4.0 steals per game. Fancher led the Captains in scoring (16 points) and rebounding (7 rebounds) as they held off a comeback bid at York, including knocking down three of four free throws in the final seconds to provide the difference against the Spartans. Fancher swiped a season-high six steals and dished out five assists at Southern Virginia while helping lead the CNU defense to forcing a season-high 52 turnovers against the Knights.

NOTES AROUND THE CONFERENCE

Nearly halfway through the conference season, Marymount (8-0 CAC) is the lone unbeaten in conference play, with Christopher Newport one game back in second place at 7-1. Mary Washington and York are tied for third at 6-2 in CAC play ... Christopher Newport is ranked No. 13 in the D3hoops.com and No. 11 in the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) rankings, while Marymount is receiving votes in both polls ... Frostburg State sophomore Victoria Diggs averaged 10.5 points per game in a 1-1 week for the Bobcats, and notched five steals in a win over Wesley on Saturday. Diggs ranks third in the CAC in scoring this season with 14.5 points per game ... Mary Washington senior Taylor Barton shot 61.5% from the field this week as UMW split its two contests, including a 5-for-6 performance against Marymount ... Marymount sophomore Regan Lohr averaged 18.0 points and 3.0 steals per game in another 2-0 week for the Saints. Lohr leads the CAC in free throw % (86.8%) and ranks fourth in scoring (14.3 PPG) ... Salisbury junior Kaylyn French averaged 13.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals per game in a 2-0 week for Salisbury. She shot 40.0% from the floor and was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line ... Katie Robey scored in double digits in both of St. Mary's games this week. Robey started the week with 10 points, three rebounds, and two assists at Salisbury before tallying 14 points, a career-best five field goals, six boards, and three steals at Penn State Harrisburg ... Southern Virginia freshman guard Abby Olsen scored 8.5 points per game off the bench last week ... Wesley junior Monshea Newsome-Murray totaled 24 points, 11 rebounds, nine assists and seven steals in Wesley's two games on the week ... York junior Katie McGowan averaged 17.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week for the Spartans. McGowan notched 12 points, six boards, three assists, two steals and a block in a win over Penn State Harrisburg, before tallying 22 points, seven rebounds, two assists and a pair of blocked shots in a narrow loss to CNU.
